Project Summary

The project demonstrates an innovative and sustainable approach to the future use of Ireland’s boglands. By establishing Ireland’s first high-density Sphagnum moss site, it shows how peatland restoration can deliver climate and biodiversity benefits while supporting local employment. The knowledge gained has the potential to be applied to other suitable bogs across Ireland and beyond, helping to support a just transition and long-term sustainable jobs.

Overall Objective:

• Establish Ireland’s first high-density Sphagnum moss farm to support peatland restoration and carbon sequestration.
• Develop a replicable approach to sustainable bogland use that supports biodiversity, climate action and local jobs.

Project Impact:

At the Derrymore Sphagnum Farm, Shane Quinn is growing sphagnum moss for the horticulture sector and for environmental protection and bog restoration. Receiving funding through EUJTF has enabled them to establish Ireland’s first high-density Sphagnum Moss site and experiment with different growing techniques.
