EU Just Transition Fund Call (Currently Closed):

Bus Operator Aid Scheme

This scheme has now closed for applications.

The NTA has opened a call to support the decarbonisation of fleet for private bus operators in the EU JTF Territory.

An event was held on Tuesday 15th October 2024 to provide essential guidance and consultation for private operators in the region who are interested in transitioning their fleets to electric vehicles. Eligible bus operators are able to request the NTA for consultancy to kick start the operator’s move to electric vehicles.

The Grants will be available for a variety of civils, planning and directly associated infrastructure, e.g. chargers. The grant will not, however, be available for the purchase of a bus. Grant Aid can only be provided for projects where work has not already been committed to start prior to the Application for consultancy.

Call start and end dates:

Call launch date: 15th October 2024

Closing date: 31st January 2025

Geographical area covered:

EU Just Transition Fund territory. This includes the entire counties of Laois, Longford, Offaly, Roscommon, Westmeath, and municipal districts of Ballinasloe (Co. Galway), Athy and Clane-Maynooth (Co. Kildare), and Carrick-on-Suir and Thurles (Co. Tipperary).

All candidates for this scheme have to be either an NTA licensed Bus Operator or a contracted NTA Local Link Operator which has at least 50% of its routes AND at least one depot located in the eligible EU JTF territory

Policy objective:

This call falls under the EU JTF programme Priority 3: Providing former peat communities with smart and sustainable mobility options to enable them to benefit directly from the green transition. The specific operations concerned are Action 3.2: Support decarbonisation of fleet for private bus operators.

Eligible applicants:

This scheme is aimed at bus operator companies located within the EU JTF territory. All candidates for this scheme have to be either an NTA licensed Bus Operator or a contracted NTA Local Link Operator which has at least 50% of its routes AND at least one depot located in the eligible EU JTF territory.

The selection for candidates for this Aid Scheme has already been completed and candidates have been informed.

Total amount of support: €600,000

Call start and end dates:

The call was launched at the ‘Accelerating the Transition to Electric Buses’ event on 15 October 2024.

Application end date is 31 January 2025.

Appeals Process:

Appeals Process

Applicants who wish to seek clarification or request a review of the decision may do so by contacting the NTA via email. All such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please include the following in your email:

  • Your organisation’s name
  • The reference number of your application (if available)
  • A summary outlining the grounds for your query or request for review

Requests should be sent within 10 working days of notification of rejection to: eujusttransition@nationaltransport.ie

If an appellant is unhappy with the appeals process, they can make a complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman, 6 Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2 , D02 W773.

Further information:

Conference was held on 15th October for the previously selected Bus Operators informing them of the scheme and application process.

Those Bus Operators who are eligible for this funding will have been provided with an email address to which they can send a request for Consultancy. The email request for consultancy has to be received by the NTA by 31st Jan 2025 to be considered.

Following the consultancy, the Bus Operator can then chose to take part in the grants process – the final date for the request for an EU JTF Bus Operator Grant is 17th April 2025.
